Let this be my protest,
my rebellion:
 
To love you
without knowing 
what you believe.
 
Let this be the way I live—
to remember who I am,
who we are:
 
above terror,
above illusion,
above our trembling certainty.
 
Let me be the one
who plunders the storm
to the still eye—
where everything stops.
And everything is seen.
 
If I must perform,
let my stage be
darkness,
where we are
all the same.
 
Let this be my rebellion:
to feel it all
without flinching.
To meet collapse
without collapsing.
 
To fill my pockets with profligate wonder—
and pass it on,
not knowing
if more will come.
 
Let me miss this moment
while it is here—

this golden, effulgent moment—
 
Let it fill me with
emptiness, and
holy ache
for what will never be again.
 
Let me love you
without knowing
what you believe.
 
Let me
let you
love me.
 
For no good reason.
 
Let my line in the sand
be one where we plant seeds,
and share the harvest, untallied.
 
Let us be like children—
before we heard
we were different.
 
If we must be afraid,
let us fear losing ourselves
to ideas we never chose.
 
If we must choose a side,
let it be sovereignty.

Let it be this:
to make beauty—
even if it’s gone tomorrow.
 
To offer a hand
when the world asks us
to make a fist.
 
Let this be my protest—
to love you
without knowing
what you believe.
